Supercomputing is all about pushing out the leading edge of computer speed and performance. Super computers are the mainframe computers that are among the largest, fastest, and most powerful of those available at a given time. Supercomputers are capable of manipulating massive amount of data in relatively short time. Super computers are used to solve problems that are too complex and too large for standard computers. The term supercomputer is also sometimes applied to far slower but still impressively fast computers. Most super computers are really multiple computers that perform parallel processing. Blue Gene/L is the fastest supercomputer and has overtaken Earth Simulator supercomputer, which was the fastest supercomputer in the world from 2002 to 2004. Blue Gene/L can do more than 280 trillion calculations a second.
